Obituary for James Austin Blake

James Austin Blake of Houston left this life on May 3, 2018. His 75th birthday was on May 2. Jim is survived by his adored son, Tran Taylor Blake, of College Station, and his beloved soul-mate, Alicia H. Ide, also of Houston. Other survivors are his former wives, Nan Werner Blake and Susan Wittig Albert of Austin, and Dayle Blake Krinsky of Houston. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice Boutin Blake and James A. Blake, Sr., and by his brothers-in-law, Max and Marc Werner.

Jim was born in Attleboro, Mass., and raised in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and Aiken, South Carolina. He graduated high school from St. Angela Academy, Aiken, and was awarded a Bachelor of Architecture degree, with honors, from The University of Texas at Austin. He also attended the Aiken Branch of The University of South Carolina and L.S.U. University in Baton Rouge. Game days were always in a house divided; Jim was a fierce and loyal fan of the sports teams of all three schools.

Jim worked in architecture at offices in Augusta, Ga., Columbia, S.C., Baton Rouge, La., and in Austin and Houston where he ran his own firms. He was a consultant for several prison facilities, and he was employed as a construction supervisor for the Houston Independent School District. An avid hunter, fisherman, and boating enthusiast, Jim enjoyed the camaraderie of his many friends and companions and was a sportsman who advocated for sensible gun control. While in junior and senior high school, Jim played basketball and was a 5-year State Diving Champion in South Carolina.

Always witty and fun, Jim used all his steely resolve to battle cancer for the past several years with the help of the doctors and staff of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, where donations may be made in his memory. A celebration of Jim’s life will follow this summer.
