Obituary for Rachel Anne Humphries

Rachel Anne (Zoch) Humphries was born December 30, 1955 to Leroy N. Zoch and Constance A. Gilbert at Herman Hospital in Houston, Texas.

Rachel attended St. Luke’s Lutheran School and Bethany Lutheran School, being confirmed at Bethany in April, 1969. She graduated from Aldine High School and attended North Harris County College.

She met her husband Mike at the Aikido dojo, where she earned 4th level belt and honorable Shidion. Rachel and Mike married in 1980 and Lydia arrived to much joy and celebration on Cinco de Mayo, 1990.

Rachel was an avid reader, a groupie of all libraries. It is doubtful that another human on this earth read as much as Rachel did. There was nothing she loved more than sitting outside reading, listening to the trees sing.  She loved classical music and for a time played the Bells at Resurrection Lutheran Church.

The love of Rachel’s life was her daughter Lydia. Some of her proudest moments were watching Lydia in the marching band at Klein High School. Rachel was a born caretaker and has taken loving care of her husband Mike throughout recent illnesses.

Rachel loved to cook and was a cook’s cook, specializing in Thai food, country food, and her famous salsa which was present at all gatherings. She was a closet trekkie, loved her felines and always rotated a new kitten, when necessary, into her small herd of cats.

Rachel’s well known hobby was crocheting; many close to her have hats, mittens, blankets, scarves, doilies, potholders, stuffed animals, and more. Rachel kept everyone warm as toast with her wildly colorful blankets and throws! She is known for her wry sense of humor, sarcastic wit, and general refusal to adhere to any norms of conversation – she said what she wanted, when she wanted, and would giggle at making others feel a bit uncomfortable with her statements.

Rachel was clever, sharp, quick witted, and highly opinionated, some might say.

Rachel is survived by her husband Michael Wayne Humphries, beloved daughter Lydia Esther Humphries, and her mother Constance Anne Zoch, of Spring, Texas.  Rachel is also survived by her siblings Julie Marie Zoch, John Nelson Zoch, and Paul Allen Zoch, numerous nieces, great nieces, great nephews, cousins by the dozens, friends and family members.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 12, at Resurrection Lutheran Church: 1612 Meadow Edge Lane, Spring, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, feel free to donate to the church or charity of your choice, or to the HOG (Happy Old Geezer) society at Resurrection Lutheran Church.
