Obituary for Nicole Diane Coleman

Nicole Diane Coleman, 23, lost her life on December 31, 2018 in Austin, Texas, murdered by an unknown assailant who remains at large. Her death is a tragedy that has shaken her family and friends to their core. She also struggled intermittently with mental illness. But Nicole was much more than a crime victim or a psychiatric patient. She was a loving, brilliant, funny young woman.

Born March 3, 1995, Nicole is the middle child of Dawn Marie Rayon and Michael Sean Coleman, the younger sister of Chloe and the older sister of Ashley. Her immediate family lives in the Houston area.
They want you to know she loved naps. She had a hilarious sense of humor. She loved the ocean, and trees, and going for long walks. She was very athletic and loved playing sports. She was delighted by fireflies.

Nikki and her sisters were close. They will miss listening to music and dancing together; they’ll miss her empathy and compassion, and the times she was there when they needed to talk.
She was deeply spiritual, and she encouraged her friends and family to be strong in faith.Nicole was very open-hearted. She worried about homeless people. She detested injustice, and she always spoke out if she felt someone was treated unfairly.

From her mid-teens onward, Nikki struggled, and as much as her family and her doctors worked to help her, she couldn’t seem to make it all the way back to the bright shiny Nicole of before. She was frequently hospitalized, and she self-medicated with drugs. Despite her struggles, she completed her Associates Degree at Lone Star College with a perfect GPA of 4.0. She was proud of that accomplishment. She was also a remarkable writer and poet.

Nicole hoped to become a psychologist so that she could work with other young people who needed support. She hoped to fall in love and marry and have children of her own. That future was denied her, but we trust that she is now free and happy, watching over those who love her so much.

Nicole was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Diane Marie Rathburn of Michigan. Diane was present at Nikki’s birth, and Nicole was named after her.Her other surviving relatives include her grandparents: Steven Rayon of Galveston; Jimmy and Sylvia Coleman of Bedford; and Jillian Coleman Wheeler and Dempsey Wheeler of Austin. She also leaves behind her one-year-old nephew, Easton, son of Chloe and Mike Beverley, and a close family of uncles, aunts and cousins who will forever miss her.

Nicole’s ashes will be interred at a later date in the Coleman family cemetery in Nixon, Texas.
