Obituary for Kevin James O'Brien

Kevin James O’Brien passed away November 11, 2018, surrounded by love from his family both near and far after a brief illness. Kevin was a two- time cancer survivor and Navy veteran.
No matter what life threw at Kevin, he always soundly beat it. We thought he was invincible.

Kevin was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the second of five children born to Robert and Jeanne O’Brien. Kevin was a lifelong sports enthusiast. He enjoyed participating in bowling, baseball, football and basketball through High School. Kevin stayed an avid sports fan throughout his life. He was devoted to his San Francisco Giants and Miami Dolphins- good season or bad.

Kevin was also well known for his incredible work ethic and high standards of excellence. From his very first job as a dishwasher at Mama Tree’s throughout his many years in hotel and hospitality, Kevin always strived for excellence, meticulous in every detail.

He didn’t believe in doing anything in an ordinary way; all endeavors deserved an exemplary effort. He expected the best out of everyone but was a fair boss during his employment in San Diego (Stuart Anderson’s), Las Vegas (The Rio), Reno (Silver Legacy) and Galveston (The Hotel Galvez).

He wasn’t ever afraid to try new adventures. In his 50’s, Kevin went to go back to school to get his degree in his passion, Hospitality. He earned an AA Degree in Hospitality from El Paso Community College in under 18 months. Kevin applied to and was accepted into The Conrad Hilton School of Hospitality at the University of Houston, one of the top two programs in the nation. When he graduated with his BA Degree, He was already working on his Master of Art Degree!

In October 2017, Kevin had a heart attack and required open heart surgery; this didn’t deter Kevin from completing his MA on time and at the top of his class. While recovering from surgery, Kevin worked to complete several of his final papers while in the ICU. Kevin maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout his degrees and received the highest award for excellence out of all of the master’s graduate candidates. Out of the many accolades Kevin received through the years, that award meant the most to him. He sought to inspire others to never think it was too late to change your life, learn something new and do something great with your life.

When it came to family and friends, Kevin was always someone you could always count on- no matter what the situation was, no matter what you needed- no judgment. He was fiercely loyal, dependable and terribly fun. His nieces and nephews thought of Kevin as their very own Uncle Buck, just better dressed. He was generous to a fault, nothing but the best was given. We want Kevin to always be remembered for his intelligence, devotion to family especially our parents, loyalty to his friends, wicked sense of humor, devilishly good looks who also had a great eye for a photo op with a pretty girl.

Kevin was preceded in death by his father, Robert J O’Brien, his grandparents James and Mary DeGregori and James and Ann O’Brien and his aunt and uncles Jimmy and Mary O’Brien and Russell O’Brien. Kevin is survived by his loving mother, Jeanne O’Brien and his four siblings: Kathi (Don) David, Kenny (Angelica) O’Brien, Kimberly (Ron) Hammel and Kellee (Bill) Harrigan. Kevin will always watch over his beloved nieces and nephews: Nathan (Tesha) Freeman, Daniel (Amber) Freeman, Brittney David: Ariel, Morgan, Marshal, Arianna, Mason Hammel; Danielle Harrigan and his great nephews and nieces: Jason, Sophia, Natalee, Daxton Freeman. In addition, Kevin leaves his devoted aunts and uncle: Thomas and Gayle DeGregori, Joan O’Brien and his cousins: Alice Mrdic, James Degregori, Roger Degregori, Pat O’Brien, Mike O’Brien, Leslie O’Brien, Laura Walker, Dan O’Brien, Maureen Casassa.

There just aren’t any words to describe our tremendous loss of a son, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend. Kevin lived life to the fullest. We should all be that fearless. We love you forever and rest in peace. You earned it.

Interment will be January 24th (his birthday) at 2PM at  Fort Bliss Cemetery. Reception following at the family home, Kevin’s North Star. Please email or call 915-591-0123 for the address.
